English Major Requirements
For students entering the major during and after Autumn 2005
Core Requriements
- English 201 (British Literature to 1800)
- English 202 (British Literature after 1800)
- English 290 OR 291 (Pre- or Post-Civil War American Literature)
- English 398 (Critical Writing for Majors)

35 Hours (7 courses) at 400 Level and Above
- Two of the 7 courses must be in Literature before 1900, including
one course in literature before 1800
- One of the 7courses must be in Literature after 1900
- One of the 7courses must be in an area of English Studies that
is not literature (Composition, Creative Writing, Critical Theory,
Film, Folklore, Linguistics, Rhetoric)

15 Hours (3 courses) of Electives
- Any English course may count as an elective. See course descriptions.
- Up to five (5) hours of English 693 (Independent Study) may
be used as part of the required 60 hours.
- Although English 693 is repeatable to 10 hours, only five hours
may be counted towards the major.
Minimum Grades
- A grade of C or better is required in 398. A grade of C- or
better is required in any other course applied toward the major.
- You must earn at least a 2.0 (C) cumulative grade point average
in the coursework toward your major.
For students entering the major before Autumn 2005
Core Requriements

- One of the 7 courses must be in Literature before 1800
- One of the 7 courses must be in Literature after 1800
- One of the 7 courses must be in an area of English Studies
that is not literature (Composition, Creative Writing, Critical
Theory, Film, Folklore, Linguistics, Rhetoric)
- Your 500-level courses must include a focus area, that is, a
set of at least three related courses. Focus courses may overlap
with any of the upper-level course categories listed above.
- Up to five (5) hours of English 693 (Independent Study) may
be used as part of the required 60 hours. Although English 693
is repeatable to 10 hours, only five hours may be counted towards
the major.

- A grade of C or better is required in 398. A grade of C- or
