Winter Course Descriptions are Now Online in The English Paper

Get Your Copy of the 2007 Cornfield Review

The 2007 issue of The Cornfield Review is currently available for free at various spots around campus, so pick up your copy (or two, or three,...) and enjoy the great poetry, prose, photography, and artwork that awaits inside.

Also, the current edition of The Cornfield Review: Online is up and running and features comic illustrations, photography, and poetry from OSU Marion students as well as artists from around the Central Ohio area. We invite you to stop by the site and help celebrate OSU Marion's fine literary tradition.

We are currently accepting submissions for the upcoming issue; please contact Ben McCorkle (mccorkle.12@osu) for questions, guidelines, etc.

English major Sarah Stahl's poem "Nervosa" has recently been accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of Epitome

Epitome is a visual and literary arts magazine focusing on work by, and issues related to, women in the Northeast Ohio area.

Prospective English Major Publishes Article in Marine Corps Times

Beirut Memorial web site

Sophomore and prospective English/Comparative Studies major Tabitha Clark recently had her article "In the Shade of Carolina Pines" accepted for publication in the Marine Corps Times, a publication distributed internationally to active and non-duty Marines and family. A version of the article, which is a rhetorical/design analysis of the Beirut Memorial in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was written in Ben McCorkle's English 110 course during Spring Quarter 2007.

New Assistant Professor

Nathan Wallace, currently a Visiting Professor, is our newest faculty member in English at OSU-Marion. He received his PHD from the University of Notre Dame, and his wide array of interest include visual culture, Enlightenment philosophy (particularly Edmund Burke), as well as British and Irish literatures. Courses he is teaching this year include English 202: British Literature 1800 to Present and English 596: Studies in Literature and Other Arts.

Assistant Professor In the Running for National Short Film Competition

Vote for Ben's "Big Idea"

Ben McCorkle is among a field of 25 semi-finalists in the Sundance Channel's "What's the Big Idea?" short film competition. Entrants were asked to shoot and edit a 1-minute pitch for an innovative green concept, invention, or activity. Open voting on the entries runs through the end of May to determine the top five finalists, after which a panel of expert judges will decide the winner. Ohio Board of Regents Grant

 

The Departments of English at OSU-Marion and OSU-Columbus and the Writing Workshop at OSU-Columbus have been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Ohio Board of Regents for their collaborative project, "Assessing Assessment: A Case Study of the Impact of Proposed Placement Guidelines on Student Autonomy and Institutional Culture, Policy, and Procedure." Kay Halasek serves as PI. Research contributors include Michael Lohre (OSU-Marion), Martha Sims (Writing Workshop), and Lis Lindeman (OSU-Columbus)

Marcia Dickson has received an Ohio Magazine 2006 Excellence in Ohio Education Award.

New Assistant Professor

 

Sara Crosby is a new faculty member in English. She received her PHD from the University of Notre Dame, and her areas of interest are print culture, popular culture, and feminist theory, as well as early and antebellum American literature. Courses she is teaching this year include English 290: Colonial and U.S. Literature to 1865 and English 551: U.S. Literature, 1830-1865.

New Website

 

The English Department has a new website, launched mid-Autumn, 2006. The idea for the design of the web site was a collaborative effort among students in Catherine Braun's English 304/405 in Spring, 2006. Developing new content for the new website is an ongoing process. We hope you will check back often as we build the new site and continue to add new features and content.
